I don't know how to define "Middle Grade," but Angela's definition sounds g reat!
I'd recommend the following for 4th through 8th graders:
Breaking Stalin's Nose / by Eugene Yelchin is a recent favorite.
Other great titles are:
Wasatch Summer / Anola Pickett The Penderwicks : a summer tale of four sisters, two rabbits... / Jeanne Bi rdsall The Penderwicks on Gardam Street / Jeanne Birdsall The Penderwicks at Point Mouette / Jeanne Birdsall

I think of middle grade as a book with potential appeal to 4th through 8th graders. Great middle grade books get at the heart of what it means to grow from a child into a teen and all the craziness that goes along with it.
Recent favorites of mine: See You at Harry's by Jo Knowles Okay for Now by Gary D. Schmidt

For the first two weeks of July, we will be discussing some the welcome ret urn of great books for middle grade readers. Yes, young adult literature co ntinues to outpace middle grade in terms of numbers, but we've noticed late ly that tucked between the seemingly endless volumes of y.a. angst, dystopi as and romance (supernatural and otherwise) is a growing number of solid mi ddle grade novels, after a rather long drought. We invite you to address th ese questions:
How do you define "middle grade"? What makes a great middle grade book? What are some of your recent favorites?
