Then the first book that has to be looked at is Sharon Drapers, Out of my m ind! This not only looks at family dynamics, but at the world of a young gi rl unable to interact with her family, except through facial movement, and noise. Her struggle to get out what is in her head and heart! The precious "words" that consume her, but so elusive to her mouth.

What impacts our families dynamics also spills over into the real world out side of our home. Draper eloquently portrays this child's struggle to be un derstood, not treated like an idiot. Moving and powerful, a must read for e very educator and parent of a special needs child.

 Family Dynamics

Let's turn out thoughts to the CCBC-Net topic for the second part of May: Family Dynamics.

Sometimes a book for children or teens perfectly captures a realistic slice of family life, whether it’s a picture book that showcases authentic exchanges between babies, toddlers or preschoolers and their grown-ups, or a novel illuminating the give and take (and sometimes love/ hate) dynamics among siblings. Perhaps it’s a story that acknowledges how true feelings can be revealed in small moments of family life. During the second part of May, we’ll talk family dynamics on CCBC-Net—what books do you think best convey realities of relationships in families?
