One of my favourite intergenerational friendships is the one between Calpur nia and her grandfather as described in the very excellent book The Evoluti on of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly.

Their friendship blossoms when 11 year old Calpurnia realizes that her gruf f, intimidating grandfather is an amateur naturalist just like her, a kindr ed spirit who enjoys observing and recording the beauty of the living world around them. The sole girl among her six brothers, it is interesting that Calpurnia is the primary one in her family who spends a substantial amount of time with her antisocial grandfather, roaming the outdoors collecting s pecimens, recording his efforts to make whisky out of pecans, discussing Ch arles Darwin's recently published controversial book, and even discovering a new species of plant together. Readers may also find interesting the vas t difference in societal expectations of girls and boys at the turn of the 20th century, but what fascinates me the most about this book is the sweet, unexpected bond between Calpurnia and her grandfather.

Happy reading! ~Armin

 Friendship: Variations on the Theme

Recent picture book favorites about friendship have included A Visitor for Bear by Bonnie Becker and Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox by Susan Blackaby.

I thought Heart of a Samurai was an interesting look at a cross cultural friendship between a boy from isolationist Japan and the captain of a whaling ship. I think cross cultural friendships are a fascinating sub-genre of the friendship story. Anybody else have favorites in that area?
