"Marshall Armstrong is New to Our School" is a clever new picture book by David Mackintosh about a new boy at school who is a bit different. You may know a Marshall; quirky, wears hats, brings oddly wrapped cold lunch, doesn't own a television... One day he invites his classmates to his birthday party. Some children don't go, but the kids who do are in for a great surprise. I like the realistic nature of the story. It reminds children to be open minded. The story is told from the point of view of one of Marshall's classmates.

I like that book too. And, I also love another book Peggy Rathmann illustrated called BOOTSIE BARKER BITES (written by Barbara Bottner). Although this picture book symbolizes the antithesis of friendship as Bootsie Barker is one horror of a bully, in seeing the MC survive and overcome Bootsie, a reader can be empowered if they encounter someone who is NOT a friend.

I have to comment on this subject because this book has been a favorite of mine for years, Ruby the copycat by Peggy Rathmann. I love the life lesson and the relationship that develops. I also adore the illustrations especially Ruby's hair, her pointy shoes, her dress with pinned-on daisies and her fake fingernails!!!
