Some thirty years ago, a remarkable trilogy by Rosa Guy was published about the many sides of friendship in the Harlem of the late '40s and 50's. Youn g women of different social classes were thrown together in a crumbling are a of New York but were buoyed by honesty, generosity of spirit and humor. T hose novels were THE FRIENDS, RUBY, and EDITH JACKSON. They barely survive today but are deserving of a new publication. In my view, they've never bee n surpassed and are much more than just cultural relics. George Nicholson
