Two books stand out to me as excellent representations of friendship in chi ldren's and YA literature. SAME SUN HERE by House and Vaswani The compelling friendship of these two characters, Meena and River, evolves in genuine voices as they learn to confide in each other through a series of letters. The authors wrote this novel through actual letters to each ot her, mailed back and forth in real time. This heartfelt portrayal of friendship is a delight!
THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN by Applegate touches on the dedication and empathy of animal friends and their devotion to making life better. Ivan's heart and his love for his friends makes this book one of my new classics.
For my childhood favorites, I agree ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, I CAPTURE THE CAS TLE and A RUBY IN THE SMOKE were the three that come to mind for dynamic fr iendships in a finely written novel.
