Sheila Welch posted better than I could have about WORDS OF STONE and OLIVE'S OCEAN. I agree with her about these books. OLIVE'S OCEAN had a familiar feel to me when I read it, based on an experience I had as a sixth grader. Imperfect (or nonexistent) friendships are challenging to write about, but they are probably more common than the kind enjoyed by the beloved friends in CHESTER'S WAY, another excellent Kevin Henkes book (it's a picture book).
