I waited anxiously for the movie and was not disappointed! I think the lea ds did a super job and fit my thoughts of the characters. I thought Peta w ould be a larger guy so was surprised when I accepted the character so easi ly during the film. The flaming entrance and Katniss' dress with flames la ter was wonderful -- great use of special effects. I wanted more of the co stuming and pageantry but I understand the time limitations. The Capitol C ity was indeed Oz!! I missed the makeup and hairstyle artists as they were good comic relief for me as I read the books. Maybe they will appear in t he second movie -- Cinna was terrific. Casting did a great job and the pac e of the movie was good. Of course, the books were better!!! :)
The hype right after the movie debuted was felt even in my elementary schoo l. Fifth graders literally rushed into the LMC to check the catalog to see if we had the books. We don't. I haven't bought them or the Twilight ser ies for my K-5 collection. They are written for YA and I decided middle sc hool and up was soon enough. If 10 year olds are going to read the book -- their parents are going to have to buy it or they will need to go to the p ublic library. We only own the first 4 Harry Potters too. We will request copies of the final 3 from the middleschool for students who want to conti nue to read the series but we have found that few are that diligent of read ers. Our copy of Goblet of Fire doesn't get that much use. They read one and two and either are moving on to the next school or the family ends up p urchasing the series for at home. We do a lot of introducing kids to a g reat variety of series -- especially those that are written for the 6-8th g rade crowd. We borrow sequels from middle school fo r those who want to kee p going. IF we end up with lots of requests for a specific middle school l evel series -- The Hidden by Haddox is one example -- then I purchase copie s of the entire series! Budget constraints and shelf room put some limitat ions on our collection size.
I have enjoyed Matched an Crossed as novels following the Hunger Games seri es. I really don't like to re-read books. Too many others to explore!! Loving all the comments on this topic.
