A big thanks to the School of Education for hosting this discussion. Megan, I am prompted to give you my final thoughts. Several are based on points raised in the discussion balanced against what I saw and experienced at the recent Bologna Children's Book Fair.
I have learned the following: - children will benefit most by being given a mix of trade and school and library books. - the distinction between children's trade and school and library books is huge: This is on many levels, including author's voice and picture research, and publishers' outlook and place in the market. - the extent and level of activity of trade nonfiction publishing in the US far exceeds that in the UK or elsewhere in the world. - the impact of digital publishing on children's nonfiction is not yet so strong that it prevents a lively discussion about printed books.
I intend to explore these topics further. To do that, I would appreciate any authors and illustrators of children's trade books who are willing to share their experiences with a producer of school and library books contacting me directly. Details of contracts, fees, budgets, schedules etc. that I would like to know about can be kept confidential if desired.
Lionel
