This is a terribly important discussion, especially about the high price of permission fees.Depending on the subject of my NF book, I have gone to the Library of Congress for photos which is much more affordable than, say, Co rbis.  Since many of my books are art books I go to a variety of sources for photos and permission to use them.  And I have found that many museum s, institutions and individuals are willing to negotiate fees, especially w hen I emphasize that the book is for children.  Other times they refuse a nd we have to lose images that would have been outstanding for the book.Sus an Goldman Rubin

I will usually go with a company like Corbis and they usually charge from 3 00 to 350 a piece for a photo that is a spot to one quarter of the page. If you want a photo that takes up the whole page... well... I'm not sure how high the price on that would be. I illustrate my books but if I were going to be using all photographs you can imagine how costly things could get. I could lose my whole advance! meghan

 Non-fiction challenges

Hi, I am comparatively new to the list, and have really enjoyed this month's di scussion on non-fiction. Heather Montgomery brought up some great questions as ways of evaluating and improving informational books, as well as the su bject of  illustration/photos.  I want to combine her questions with a point brought up in a Dec. 31st blog by Marc Aronson on his Non-Fiction Mat ters over at SLJ. And that is the high cost of archival photos which limits the quality of images available to authors, which can have a huge impact o n the quality of a book. Here is a list of the costs I have recently been q uoted for images by Time Inc. Time does not even hold the rights to the ima ges. They simply have copies and the ability to supply them. Print run of 5000- $500.00 USD Print run of 10,000- $750.00 USDPrint run of 15,000- $900.00 USD Including a fee for supply of images: $300.00 USD I apologize, if this is not the place to bring up an issue like this. It is a critical issue for non-fiction authors. Thank you, Mary Cronk Farrell
