Non-fiction challenges

Hi,

I am comparatively new to the list, and have really enjoyed this month's discussion on non-fiction. Heather Montgomery brought up some great questions as ways of evaluating and improving informational books, as well as the subject of illustration/photos. I want to combine her questions with a point brought up in a Dec. 31st blog by Marc Aronson on his Non-Fiction Matters over at SLJ. And that is the high cost of archival photos which limits the quality of images available to authors, which can have a huge impact on the quality of a book. Here is a list of the costs I have recently been quoted for images by Time Inc. Time does not even hold the rights to the images. They simply have copies and the ability to supply them.

Print run of 5000- $500.00 USD****

Print run of 10,000- $750.00 USD****

Print run of 15,000- $900.00 USD

Including a fee for supply of images: $300.00 USD

I apologize, if this is not the place to bring up an issue like this. It is a critical issue for non-fiction authors.

Thank you,

Mary Cronk Farrell
