Offline one of you asked me to explain a bit more about K and L. Well if I can think of a prime example of a highly appealing K book it is this year's Sibert winner: Balloons Over Broadway -- an engaging, colorful, quirky rec ounting of an unfamiliar true story with many hooks for kids -- and even an activity kit pdf available for free from the publisher. Here the knowledge exists, and the book finds a way to share it. By contrast an L book might be last year's Sibert winner, Kakapo Rescue -- where the process is the sub ject. To put it a different way, in a K book, the knowledge exists, it just needs to be transmitted. In an L book, the quest for knowledge, which may well be uncertain and ongoing, is as important as what the author finds. Th e important point here -- and again why I want to nudge Megan and Lisa -- i s that L books are likely to disagree, to be open ended, and to place as mu ch value on how a case is made as on final -- and perhaps as yet undetermin able -- accuracy. In a word, I'd urge them
to give "inquiry" pride of place in the values they prize alongside any assertion of final truth.
