RE: Cover Art--The Underneath

nt The Underneath is a&n bs p;perfect example of cover art doing a great disservice to a book. Although an animal story, the novel has a complexity and dark undertones that only older readers can fully appreciate, but the cover art is clearly targe ting a much younger audience for whom the sophistication of the book will b e lost. I had the novel in a middle school collection and I could not even get the kids who were avid fans of animal stories to read it. The cover was a complete turnoff to them. What really annoyed me is that the publisher u sed the same cover art for the paperback release. An opportunity was lost t o redesign a cover that would appeal to an older audience the book deserves .

ONT-SI I had that concern with The Underneath . Strikingly beautiful, mystical, creepy story with graphically-described cru elty to animals. But the cover had a cute and cuddly-looking dog and kitten s with a Homer Price vibe. No argument with either the story or the cover, just an unfortunate mismatch in my opinion.
