Michelle,
Thanks for sharing that excerpt from Curtis's letter. He is an astounding teacher. The MAS teachers are very much under attack.
Though the district is trying to appear reasonable in all of this, saying they're trying to incorporate Mexican American history and culture into the existing social studies curriculum, there is a larger political context that did not go unnoticed by all those associations and organizations that signed the Statement in Opposition to Book Censorship in the Tucson Unified School District.
Twenty-seven free-speech and educational organizations signed it and are putting it on their websites. I talked with Joan Bertin again yesterday. The NEA (National Education Association) and the NCTM (National Council for Teachers of Mathematics) signed on yesterday.
Today I posted a powerful image of a young woman using a bullhorn to read aloud from Sherman Alexie's TEN LITTLE INDIANS. ( )
On Saturday, the College of Education at Georgia State University is live streaming its "Teach-In on Tucson." It will be livestreamed. Jeff Biggers, MAS teachers, and myself are Skyping in for one of the sessions. The link for the livestream will be posted at the Teach-In on Tucson site .
