I think there is a huge amount of work that goes into the creation of an anthology -- just look at some of those of Lee Bennett Hopkins. Most have a theme, and a sequence from beginning to end. Some poems are "found" poems and some are those he asked poets to write - based on his knowledge of the poets proclivity toward certain types, topics of poems. I would think that is a decision a committee would wrestle with -- how much creativity entered into the creation of an anthology when compared to a work that is the work of one poet (or as Jane mentioned earlier - co-poets). JMHO. http://blog.leeandlow.com/2010/05/25/amazing-stories/ provides insight into one book and begs that these talented artists be recognized for their collective work. Might be considered to be similar to the winning softball team that wins a tournament and the sponsor takes home the trophy. Many poets in an anthology -- and the anthologist that puts together the winning team takes home the trophy. Just as the members of the winning softba ll team have bragging rights about being on the State Champion team so too would the individual poets gain "bragging rights." I see nothing to preclude -- but we are getting ahead of ourselves. The nuts and bolts of an award are for the sponsoring entity to hash out and we are not going to do it in this forum.

The only thing I was really suggesting at this point was if a poetry award was to become a reality that someone take the ball and run with it. Other wise it will be a dead ball in the endzone. Sharron

Off hand, I cannot think of another award given by ALSC that is not for an original work and I do not understand why poetry should be any different. Norma Jean
