Lee and CCBC community of readers It seems that a poetry award is certainly a reasonable (if not an insightful) thought. The question might arise if collections/anthologies would be eligible, verse novels, or single poet/single title awards given. There is a procedure to request ALA to institute a *new* award -- visit

What I am not sure of is, how one might have the ALSC sponsor the award as that is the only way that the award will be announced at the annual award ceremony. Unless one conceives of a more spectacular event. Perhaps a gala ball sponsored by publishers prior to the night of the ALSC awards announcements and make the announcements a really festive occasion that all would vie for tickets. Ticket sales would help fund the award as years went on.

I'm dreaming... but it is a possibility.

I would allow: Single books of poetry by a single poet (award to the poet/illustrator of the work) Collections of poetry (award to the editor, poet, illustrator of the work) Anthologies of poetry (award to the editor and illustrator of the work) Verse novels (author of novel/illustrator if appropriate) Other books in verse form i.e. picture books with a poetic text (author of book/illustrator)

What do you think Lee -- I would *help* but don't want to manage the proposal on my own. Maybe we should start an initiative and have a committee meeting in Anaheim this summer. Need to get it going so people who might be interested in joining the initiative could get their plans for Anaheim.
