First, forgive the simplistic nature of my response as I am not a librarian , but a teacher that reads and reviews lots of books.

There are awards focused on:

* Content - Schneider for disability experience, Stonewall for LGBTQ * Author and or illustrator "characteristics" (for lack of a better word ) - Morris for debut authors, Coretta Scott King for African American exper ienced as written/illustrated by African American authors and illustrators, Pura Belpre for the Latino cultural experience as written/illustrated by L atino authors and illustrators * Genre – Sibert for informational book, YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults, Geisel for beginning readers

Yes, it's true that poetry can win in any of these categories, but when we choose to acknowledge some genres or types of books over others, the questi on I then ask is, "Why not poetry?" People take seriously the books that wi n these awards. It seems to me that the awards from IRA and NCTE are not gi ven as much attention. Would an award from ALA be more meaningful to the bu ying/reading public? I don't know, but my instincts say yes.

Best, Tricia

 Poetry

Why? A work of original poetry can be considered for the Newbery. Or, are y ou suggesting a separate award so that collections can be given an award? N orma Jean
