I would hope, at some point, a shift in phi losophy would occur given the ALA draws more to its conferences than just a ctive members. I remember sitting through several days of Notable discussio ns a few years back with a librarian friend who'd sat on a number of awards committees over the years. On the last day the chair announced in front of a room full of people that all ALA award winners were grandfathered on to the notables list, but Coretta Scott King winners had to be voted in separa tely because they "weren't a major award." The committee groaned and one member complained it would cut the number of books they could vote for on the final list. My friend, who was not on that committee looked at me and seemed embarrassed.

I think it's hard to tell who is ALSC an d who is not - but there does seem to be an attitude about non-ALSC awards as it pertains to people of color that the winners are "lesser than." That bears out from reports I get from friends who, having won one of the "lesser" awards, find it difficult to get additional projects acquired.&nbs p; That makes it doubly troubling because when acquired - those individuals get little (or no) marketing support from publishers. I've noted tha t even the Amazon announcements after ALA ignore those category winners. With the shift in population being what it is, I hope ALSC will consid er being more supportive and inclusive by bringing some of those awards int o the fold and according them with the same "front of the bus" status...... ..C
