The Brooklyn Public Library recently held its Mock Caldecott and Mock Newbery awards and we are pleased to share our results.
The winner of our Mock Caldecott award was Brooklyn illustrator John Rocco for his book "Blackout". We also named two Honor Books, "A Ball for Daisy" by Chris Raschka and "Never Forgotten", illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon and written by Patricia McKissack. Other titles up for consideration were "Grandpa Green" by Lane Smith, "I Want My Hat Back" by Jon Klassen, and "Stars", illustrated by Marla Frazee and written by Mary Lyn Ray.
We awarded our Mock Newbery to Gary D. Schmidt's "Okay for Now" and named only one Honor Book, "Inside Out and Back Again" by Thanhha Lai. The other titles we discussed were "The Apothecary" by Maile Meloy, "Breadcrumbs" by Anne Ursu, and "Jefferson's Sons: A Founding Father's Secret Children" by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley.
Everyone who participated in our Mock events had smart, incisive things to say about each of the books on our shortlists. We now look forward to seeing how closely our results will match the real awards when they are announced on Monday!
