The splendid obituary article about the late Sims Taback in the NYT (Jan. 1) cites his attention to detail while engaging in "expressionistic and comic visual storytelling." Amen!

As a member of the 2000 ALSC Caldecott Award Committee, I remember that Mr. Taback's publisher hosted a celebratory lunch for members of that Caldecott Award Committee with the honoree as the special guest. He met with 15 individuals who had probably spent more time thinking and talking about his "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat" than had most reviewers and others who paid attention to this marvelous book. We knew his book extremely well. Yet he pointed out details most (or all) of us simply hadn't had enough information to catch. What a marvelous half hour of interpretation and conversation! He was a gifted artist and generous award winner.
