I also loved Stars, Energy Island and Peaceful Pieces.

My 2011 favorites are:

The Friendship Doll by Kirby Larson

"Throughout the twentieth century, Miss Kanagawa, one of fifty-eight dolls made to serve as ambassadors from Japan to the United States, travels the c ountry learning to love while changing the lives of those who need her." Ve ry nicely paced and well written. I did not know of the ambassador dolls an d after reading it, I went off on an Internet search. I like fiction that s purs me to look for more information.

Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater "Nineteen-year-old returning champion Sean Kendrick competes against Puck C onnolly, the first girl ever to ride in the annual Scorpio Races, both tryi ng to keep hold of their dangerous water horses long enough to make it to t he finish line."--a character-driven, compelling read...set in a world simi lar to our own but strangely different. I enjoyed this more than the Hunger Games.

After I Fall by Lauren Oliver "After she dies in a car crash, teenage Samantha relives the day of her dea th over and over again until, on the seventh day, she finally discovers a w ay to save herself."--great teen dialogue, really puts you inside the mind of a teen diva...set against a parallel philosophical theme of atonement. I recently discover Ms. Oliver and plan to read more.

Sea of Dreams by Dennis Nolan I don't really care for wordless picture books but this one took my breath away! The artwork is as stunning as the story. Gorgeous!

Some nonfiction favorites that crossed my desk:

Meet the Dogs of Bedlam Farm by Jon Katz Sweet story describing four working dogs and how each is valuable to the "p ack"--lovely.

Saving Audie: a pitbull puppy gets a second chance by Dorothy Hinshaw Paten t Pit Bulls have gotten a bad rap...this well done title conveys the idea tha t even a severely abused dog can be rescued with great care and patience.

The Guardian Team: on the job with Rena and Roo by Cat Urbigkit Introduces Rena and Roo, a dog and a burro in charge of guarding the sheep on a Wyoming ranch--what can I say, I'm a sucker for great animal stories.
