Like DaNae, Many of my favorites have already been mentioned. So here are the books that top my list that haven't been mentioned so far:

Jefferson's Sons by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. Told (mostly) from the POV of Jefferson's sons by his slave Sally Hemmings. The book is brilliantly written (IMO). Equally important - the kids who have read it have been blown away by its powerful story.

The Apothecary by Maile Meloy. This is one of our Mock Newbery club picks and seems to be the one I can't keep on the shelves. This highly original page-turner is historical, adventure, and fantasy at its best.
