Many of favorites have already been covered so I will add my off-the-radar picks.
Picture Books: SAY HELLO TO ZORRO - The text is perfectly identifiable to anyone who has owned a dog or had to make room in their life for a usurper. The illustrations all but wriggle off the page. There is so much movement in Goodrich's pictures.
BROWNIE GROUNDHOG AND THE FEBRUARY FOX - A great addition to a lackluster holiday cannon. It's always good to have a diversion when a predator wants you for lunch.
11 EXPERIMENTS THAT FAILED - because really how are you going to know that you can't survive on ketchup and snow unless you apply the scientific method?
I'm also on board with THE MONEY WE'LL SAVE, I WANT MY HAT BACK, PRESS HERE, & HOORAY FOR AMANDA AND HER ALLIGATOR!
Early Chapter Books:
#1 Car Spotter - If for no other reason than the proof that mid-sized Toyotas lend themselves very well to recycling.
I'm also sure you noticed that there were new offering from CLEMENTINE & ALVIN HO. With the later, there is proof that humor can be found anywhere, even at a funeral.
Middle-Grade:
Yes, Yes, yes, to MAY AMELIA, OKAY FOR NOW, WONDERSTRUCK & THE PENDERWICKS.
CLOSE TO FAMOUS by Joan Bauer - this had been as enticing as red velvet cupcakes for my 6th grade girls who struggle with reading. Yum!
TEN MILES PAST NORMAL by Frances O'Roark Dowell - technically YA, but I'm elementary and have been handing it out to the same girls who adore Close to Famous. Every once in a while a good goat book needs recognition.
ICEFALL BY Matt Kirby - Vikings, Berserkers, Murder, what's not to love? (also another goat)
THE UNFORGOTTEN COAT by Frank Boyce - Cultural awareness as never been so brazen.
A MONSTER CALLS - perfection.

Each December on CCBC-Net, we invite members of the list to share their
favorite children's and young adult books of the publishing year.
So what 2011 books are on your list of the year's best?
