Here are a few of my favorites.
Picture books:
ABC Kids by Simon Basher-fun illustrations and alliteration. (I like all the books in this series.)
Stars by Mary Lyn Ray-wonderous thoughtful text and such sweet illustrations by Marla Frazee.
Anna Hibiscus' Song by Atinuke-makes you happy just reading it and what a celebration of an extended family.
If You're Hoppy by April Pulley Sayre-can't help singing along, such fun!
I'll add a second to Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell. I also appreciate The Watcher: Jane Goodall's Life With the Chimps by Jeanette Winter. Two different books that compliment each other. Get both!
Energy Island by Allan Drummond is an excellent introduction to alternative energy, especially wind power. Also a homage to the Danish island Samsш and to what a small group of people can accomplish!
For grades 2-3:
The No. 1 Car Spotter by Atinuke provides an eye-opening view of village life in Africa. Humorous, heart-felt, the theme of caring about/for family members is strong, so too the creativity involved in triumphing over economic difficulties. Fun b/w cartoon-like illustrations.
For older youth:
Peaceful Pieces: Poems and Quilts About Peace by Anna Grossnickle Hines-very thoughtful poems, the quilting takes my breath away.
There is no Long Distance Now: Very Short Stories by Naomi Shihab Nye. Amazing the amount of empathy Nye generates for her characters and settings in this collection of very short stories in many different places.
Christmas:
A Christmas Tree for Pyn by Olivier Dunrea-big gruff Oother, tiny pig-tailed, perserving Pyn find healing and respect through Pyn's determination to have a Christmas tree. Dunrea is always a delight.
Lighthouse Christmas by Toni Buzzeo, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter-a dear story about sharing Christmas during a wild, winter storm. Information about the Flying Santa Service noted. Sweet, gentle illustrations.
Happy reading, happy holidays everyone!
