So many of my favorites are on the best of the year lists, so I'm going to mention one of my favorite under-the-radar funny books of the year (thanks for the suggestion, Rob!). I really enjoyed "The Trouble With Chickens" by Doreen Cronin, a great early chapter book that plays with the 'hard-boiled' detective genre. Cronin delivers a solid mystery with lots of humor that can be understood by kids of different ages and appreciated by parents too.

It's so nice to see more and more high quality beginning chapter books - they're perfect for young kids reading way above grade level, and I often recommend them to families that need a read aloud for a wide age range. I can only imagine what my fellow commuters thought of the weirdo (me) snorting with laughter over a slim volume with cartoon chickens on the cover.
