The way in which paratexts can both enlighten and confuse readers is an interesting subject. Eve discusses this in the context of using timelines, which also leave a lot open to interpretation, the choice of dates and the emphasis to be given to them, the intermingling of factual dates and fictional dates from a novel. She also discusses the impact of paratext in the context of fiction where the author has written a "feel good" or hopeful ending that is inconsistent with the truth. After getting a reader to buy into the "truth" the story offers, revealing that truth to be a fiction can be very confusing.

I just want to clarify, in my original post to launch this discussion, my concern about "Gaia Warriors" was not that it let readers off with platitudes, rather it's that the Afterword had the potential to leave them feeling utterly hopeless.
