I agree with you Nell. And I'm not sure the "dream" is a reality yet.
Please excuse the blatant self-promotion, but I have to say that in her book, A Truth To Tell, Eve Tal does an excellent job of discussing closure in novels about the Holocaust for young readers where even survival is not always a "happy" ending. IMO, what she says is applicable to other "sad" endings where we as authors and librarians and teachers and parents want to young readers to derive hope from what may seem an incomprehensible conclusion. How can a young reader derive hope from an assassination or lynching?
