Dealing with death in Picture Books

On the other hand... I was a teacher and then an elementary supervisor for 29 years . During that time there were 7 deaths in my school district, 2 teachers, 2 parents, a child, and an administrator. The only book th at was available in our school libraries at that time was Judith's Viorst' s book about the death of a beloved cat.

Pat Brisson has written a marvelous picture book - I Remember Miss Perry, published by Dial, In this book, the children arrive at school to find the principal the guidance counselor and their parents in their classroom . Their beloved teacher has died in a car crash on the way to school. The n ext day the counselor encourages the children to talk about Miss Perry. The children begin remembering...telling and writing down what they loved mo st about their teacher and making pictures. This sharing helped them proces s the loss .

and revived the wonderful memories of their time together.

How I wish I had had that book to share with children during those days whe n losses hit our school district, and part of my job was to help children cope.

Death is part of the experience of many of our children. Having an appropri ate resource on hand, seems very valuable to me.
