Dealing with death in Picture Books
On the other hand... I was a teacher and then an elementary supervisor for 29 years . During that time there were 7 deaths in my school district, 2 te achers, 2 parents, a child, and an administrator. The only book that was a vailable in our school libraries at that time was Judith's Viorst's book a bout the death of a beloved cat. Pat Brisson has written a marvelous picture book - I Remember Miss Perry, p ublished by Dial, In this book, the children arrive at school to find the p rincipal the guidance counselor and their parents in their classroom. Thei r beloved teacher has died in a car crash on the way to school. The next da y the counselor encourages the children to talk about Miss Perry. The child ren begin remembering...telling and writing down what they loved most abo ut their teacher and making pictures. This sharing helped them process the loss . and revived the wonderful memories of their time together. How I wish I had had that book to share with children during those days whe n losses hit our sc hool district, and part of my job was to help children c ope. Death is part of the experience of many of our children. Having an appropri ate resource on hand, seems very valuable to me. Kay Winters children's book author www.kaywinters.com ;
