pictures AND children are living lives we wouldn't want them reading about
I think these comments are both really important to keep in mind. To that e n d, we shouldn't be "protecting" readers by censoring what ends up on the sh e lves, but instead need to find ways to offer support to those who are livin g painful realities, and help other readers approach difficult subject matte r in ways that they can handle and that help them develop compassion.
Also - not everything that we consider "not telling children about" are pai n ful realities, but sometimes just "different" realities or experiences. Amo n g the realities that need to be reflected in words and pictures are those o f LGBTQ children and teens, and those children and teens with LGBTQ parents o r other relatives. It is shameful that the sweet story And Tango Makes Thre e still tops the list of banned books.
