Thank you, Jane, I was hoping we might hear from you. I have enjoy ed following this discussion because your book, Devil's Arithmetic, is one

that haunts me. I think of it often and how you showed the horror but with hope. You did not look away but offered an honest perception that=2 0 is unforgettable. What more can a good book do?

Have tried to stay silent throughout this, but need to say a few word s.

For the record, "Number the Stars" won the Newbery the next year. The y ear that "DA" came out, the winner was "A Joyful Noise," Paul Fleisch man' s bookof poems about bugs for two voices.

My editor on the book was a rebbitzim. The book won both the Jewish Book Award, and the Jewish Libraries award, and Elie Weisel praised it h ighl y. I have heard from a huge number of Survivors who say I told their stories in away that their children and grandchildren could finally understand. 20

I am sorry if Ms. Gordon dislikes the book. That is her privilege. But I amsatisfied that I told the book to the best of my ability. And--by the wa y--I think Hannah/Chaya DID go back in time! And it was not a dream.
