Regarding the question about books for children that deal with cancer, here are some suggestions from my SCBWI chapter (Indiana):
Janna Matthies, THE GOODBYE CANCER GARDEN (illustrated by Kristi Valiant), Whitman 2011. (These women are members of Indiana's SCBWI chapter, and Janna reports that her book has just won an award at a book fair in the United Arab Emirates and is to be translated to Arabic.)
Kelly Tinkham, HAIR FOR MAMA
Terri Forehand, THE CANCER PRAYER BOOK (www.dreamwordspublishing.com) , plus a book for young people coming out soon that deals with cancer; she also has a blog and reviews books on the subject. Email: terri.forehand_at_gmail.com
I hope this is helpful!
