There are some situations where "happy endings" tend to distort the "truth" -- for example, if all a young reader knows about the Holocaust is what the s/he reads in novels for young readers, would it be fair for the child to conclude that European Jews were childlike and passive (including the adults), and were often rescued and/or smuggled out of the country by admirable Christians?
A bit of blatant self-promotion. I've just published Eve Tal's book, A Truth to Tell, which addresses the ways in which cultures shape historical narratives and hopeful "happy" endings to difficult stories can mislead our youth and misrepresent difficult historical realities. It's currently available as an ebook, but will be available soon in print.
