Nancy, I agree with what you said about our underestimation of children's awareness, as well as about how scary the subject of cancer is, especially when it is discussed so casually with so little information to appease at least some of the anxiety.

You mentioned that there are very few books still that deal with cancer, and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions of a book, whether fiction or non-fiction, that they could recommend as a resource to fill this gap?

I'm not trying to distract from the central topic here--it seems to me that the best thing we can do is be honest with our children by telling them as much as we can, in as non-sensational a way as we can. Equipping youth with good, solid information is always better than keeping them in an anxiety-ridden ignorance, even if the intention is to shield them.
