Just squeaking in at the end of the discussion, can I also commend to you the books by Anna Perera (UK), Guantanamo Boy and The Glass Collector.

Australia's Libby Gleeson has long had an interest in questions of social justice in her junior and YA fiction, including her most recent novel Mahtab's Story, which traces the story of a young girl fleeing Afghanistan with her family and ending up in Australia. It's also a fierce critique of Australia's mandatory detention policy for asylum seekers,a long-standing policy which makes may Australians feel deeply ashamed.

Along similar lines are Morris Gleitzman's Boy Overboard and Girl Underground. His most recent novel Too Small to Fail, is a typical Gleitzman-esque take on the global economic crisis.
