While we should acknowledge the importance of entertaining our readers instead of preaching to them, I think what Jessica was also trying to point out is that books designed solely to entertain have implicit messages as well--whether or not the author intended to put them there--and we and our readers can approach them critically the same way that we approach advertising or other aspects of popular culture. For instance, one of my classmates at Vermont College, who is also a high school English teacher in Florida, used her critical thesis to examine rape culture in Twilight and Hush, Hush among other popular titles.
