This is related, but discusses natives before Columbus. It might be helpfu l to set the stage for middle school students.

Before Columbus : the Americas of 1491 / Charles C. Mann. This study of Native American societies is adapted for younger readers fro m Charles C. Mann's best-selling 1491. Turning conventional wisdom on its h ead, the book argues that the people of North and South America lived in en ormous cities, raised pyramids hundreds of years before the Egyptians did, engineered corn, and farmed the rainforests.

books about Christopher Columbus from Native Perspec tives

Hello:

I'm a teen librarian in Dayton, OH. A middle school social studies teacher asked me for books about the discove ry of the 'New World' by Columbus in the 15th c. She was especially interested in collecting boo ks that looked at the event from the perspective of the indigenous populati ons encountered by early Europeans--like the Taino Indians.

I am familiar with Jane Yolen's excellent book, Encounter. As was the teacher.

I am hoping to have a book list with more than one title.

Any suggestions?

...in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at he art.
