Although I have a special fondness for the originally bound hardback books I found in my school library as a child, digital publishing and print-on-demand are allowing some great American novels for children to make new appearances. Primary among them are the meticulously researched, sensitively illustrated, and compassionate novels of the poor and dispossessed from Lois Lenski, whose regional novels for middle-level readers were in print for decades until recently.
Open Road Media, the digital publisher, will be publishing early next year seven of Lenski’s most memorable titles: Strawberry Girl, Indian Captive, Houseboat Girl, Texas Tomboy, Judy’s Journey, Prairie School, and Flood Friday. I am thrilled that these pioneering books of realistic fiction stories that Lenski gathered from her painstaking field research are going to be accessible once again to 21st century young readers. Watch for these via the Open Road website: http://www.openroadmedia.com/ ****
