I second the recommendation of Blessing's Bead and add that Debby Dahl Edwardson's latest book, My Name Is Not Easy, about Native teenagers forced into boarding schools where they were stripped of their names, their languages, and their cultures, is a finalist for this year's National Book Award. My Name Is Not Easy is based on the childhood of Edwardson's husband.

Alsaska reminds me of Blessing's Bead, a book which is just a year or so old. Has contemporary and historical Alaskan settings (dual stories), both of which deal with issues of race and class. A wonderful, beautifully written story, too!
