Speaking of Eric Rohmann, another oneof my favorite Halloween read alouds is his Pumpkinhead , which is also not scary but delightfully quirky. I adore Bone Dog and it is a better book than Pumpkinhead but I do love the quirk iness of that story. Edward T.  Scary Stories From: Megan Schliesman schliesman_at_education.wisc.edu Date: Thu, October 13, 2011 9:52 am To: "ccbc-net, Subscribers o f" ccbc-net_at_lists.wisc.edu As we wind down our discussion for the fir st part of October--scary stories for children (expectantly scary, or surpr isingly so), I'm curious what books you are sharing with children in classr ooms in libraries in anticipation of Halloween.

Even though it's not directly related to Halloween, I've always loved Lucy Dove by Janice Del N egro.  And Eric Rohmann's new picture book, Bone Dog, ris not suprisin gly scary, but it does offer a surprising basis for a story set around Hall oween with the death of the boy's dog in the opening pages. It ends up bein g a little scary, but also funny and poignant.
