Our teachers have requested that we read about the Day of the Dead this year for their unit in October. My own personal favorite is Charlie Brown and Linus and the Great Pumpkin I think it is called It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. I just purchased a new copy of the story for our library. :)

At Home my daughter enjoys reading her old favorites including Little Bill's Halloween Lift the Flap book. Raising a biracial child, she liked seeing brown faces and happy families during our holiday reading. Little Bill was really the best fit for our needs, so many books with brown faces are focused on culture or history or struggles. Ghost Dad is a fun book too based on the movie with Bill Cosby. (For Xmas the Little Bill lift the flap has a great page where the UPS man turns into Santa when you lift the flap and of course Santa is black).

Even at the age of 9 she re-reads all the books she got each year from her board books on up to her chapter books over again. This years new addition for her was Trixie the Halloween Fairy book. When it comes to reading for pleasure I never worry about anything other than that feeling of contentment. As long as she has the ability to lose herself in the reading she can read whatever she wants.
