In the back of the book the author lists where he received each photo. The majority were from one particular collection.

I tend to think they were doctored at the time they were taken because one picture is of the dad in a bunny costume when he was 4-years-old and is labeled June 1956. Yet later in the book, the main character says that his father is 46. I assume the author didn't want to manipulate the photos and purposely left the date on.

I've read some discussion of the popular YA novel, MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN, and some adults find it very creepy although it does seem to be the photographs that bother them the most. I think the reason the book is doing so well is the inclusion of those weird, black and white, staged/doctored pictures.

My understanding is that the photos are actual period photographs collected by the author and friends. They may have been staged at the time they were taken, but has anyone heard that they've been doctored for the book? I assumed as I began reading that they had been purpose-taken, and was thrilled when I discovered that they were original. So I'd be very disappointed to find out they were doctored!

Anyone know for sure?
