I've read some discussion of the popular YA novel, MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN, and some adults find it very creepy although it does seem to be the photographs that bother them the most. I think the reason the book is doing so well is the inclusion of those weird, black and white, staged/doctored pictures.

My understanding is that the photos are actual period photographs collected by the author and friends. They may have been staged at the time they were taken, but has anyone heard that they've been doctored for the book? I assumed as I began reading that they had been purpose-taken, and was thrilled when I discovered that they were original. So I'd be very disappointed to find out they were doctored!

Anyone know for sure?
