I'm glad to see the JOEY PIGZA books mentioned. I just wrote about I AM NOT JOEY PIGZA for another reason on the Heavy Medal blog, but want to say that I appreciated it enormously for the way it shows how a complicated kid deals with complicated parents and a very unconventional family situation, to say the least. At the time it was published some adults were appalled by the parents, but my 4th grade students when I read it aloud had no such feelings. They were sympathetic to them, to Joey, and just got that life is complicated indeed.
And I've just finished reading aloud Frank Cotrell Boyce's THE UNFORGOTTEN COAT which is a lovely story about undocumented immigrants (in the UK) and what it means to be "a good guide."

Gritty and relatable, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key (and all the Joey Pigza Books) is an excellent read with a realistic portrayal of ADHD and treatment.
