Another good boarding school story is The secret language by Ursula Nordstr om, the well known editor of E.B. White and many other great writers.В
I'd forgotten that the illustrations were done by Mary Chalmers, one of my all-time favorite illustrators.В

As a young reader in a small M idwestern town in which I walked to school, quite literally over the river and th ro ugh the woods, I learned about the wider world through books and books and books. I was then, and still am, fascinated by the boarding school sto ry . So exotic and different from my experience – the idea o f sharin g a room with someone other than your sister! Eating breakfast, lunch, an d dinner in a communal setting. Writing letters to mom and dad. And so on … В Some of my favorite boarding school stories are: В The “Ur” story – M adeleine by Bemelmans В The Fog Comes in on Little Pig Feetby Rosemary Wells E2Ђ“ a wonderful YA “problem” novel of the early 1970s †“ Rachel, a Brooklynite and talented pianist, is an outsider at a s noot y boarding school. В В Bloomability В by Sharon Creech – Dinnie Doone is pulled out of her somewhat haphazard ho me life and into an Swiss boarding school run by her aunt and uncle.В Dinnie has a positive experience, meeting students and making friends from ar ou nd the world В Viola in Reel Lifeby Adriana Trigiani в Ђ“ Vio la, like Rachel, hails from Brooklyn and is sent to boarding school aga in st her wishes. While challenged by the experience, she ends up finding he r place. В I haven’t read The Fog since=0 AI was a girl (1 0? 11?) – I’ve ILLed it to see what I think tod ay. I stil l remember a character named Ebie Faber, her father was the scion of th e Eberhardt Faber pencil fortune.
