Some of my favorite picture books on this topic are ones that highlight the building of relationships and classroom communities such as: Crazy Hair Day, by Barney Saltzberg; Jack's Talent, by Maryann Leffler; Do Unto Otters, by Laurie Keller. I Miss Franklin P. Shuckles, by Ulana Shihura; Danitra Brown, Class Clown, by Nikki Grimes; Our Friendship Rules, by Peggy Moss.

Two wonderful books about finding one's voice in classroom settings are Willow's Whispers, by Lana Button, and Yoon and the Jade Bracelet, by Helen Recorvits. These books can jumpstart conversations about speaking up for oneself and others.

 School Stories

It's time to start our discussion for the first part of September: School Stories.

From first days to fitting in to classroom comedies, stories about kids in school are a staple of children's literature. What are your favorite books set in schools or classrooms? Do you have go-to "School Stories" for specific purposes, such as a start-of-the school-year read-aloud?
