I really enjoyed David Yoo's new novel The Detention Club for its honest and sensitive portrayal of the precarious transition from elementary to middle school. It is a quick and a funny read, but beneath the mystery and humor is a deft exposition of just how hard it feels to make that change.
And I am indelibly fond of Esme Raji Codell's Sahara Special and Vive La Paris. I have listened to Phylicia Rashad's narration of Sahara Special over and over and it remains one of the most affecting audiobooks I have encountered. I cry and cry, in the best possible way.

School Stories
It's time to start our discussion for the first part of September: School Stories.
From first days to fitting in to classroom comedies, stories about kids
in school are a staple of children's literature. What are your favorite
books set in schools or classrooms? Do you have go-to "School Stories" for specific purposes, such as a start-of-the school-year read-aloud?
