At one time, teachers of ch's. lit (read "books") swore us to honor the dictum that series books must be avoided. When asked about "Little Women," etc., the response was "Well, they're different." Yep. Part of the problem was insisting the books were "literature", not "books. Academia reared (rears) its ugly snobbish head.
When I taught upper division students and librarians in training (or practice), I assigned the following eye-opening exercise: find a series of books you read and liked as a young(er) person, reread, review. WOW! some people wondered why the books were still in print and on the shelves including Terhune, and a boy's adventure writer-- maybe Steven something Pearce? Pence? some such, that particularly offended. There also a good many other series that shocked the adult who inhaled the books as a child. Question: Would you still keep them in the collection? Response: No. But almost all were on the shelves when I was teaching at USF (Univ. of San Francisco) in the last century.
Must go and read my series stuff--items in the newspapers like comic pages and the tragedy of sports for an Oakland A's fan. (Sigh)
