I wonder if things were different for me as an African American in a poor neighborhood. We mostly had a bookmobile that visited and that's where I got most of my books. While I remember reading The Chronicles of Narnia as a fourth grader (born in late 60s), I don't remember reading any of the other series you guys have mentioned. I know I read Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Harlequin Romances and Barbara Cartlands, the latter two due to older sisters. Or maybe it was because only the three of us were readers...
