This is one way of showing your age. As a kid, my mom bought almost the whole run of Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Bobbsey Twins and Cherry Ames at a neighbors garage sale. I read them all in what seems like a gulp. I do remember a snotty remark from a 3rd grade classmate "are you still reading those baby books?" Classroom reading was SRA kits. From then on, I read my series books in secret. Memory is much better than reality. Picked up Cherry Ames, Cruise Ship Nurse at a used bookstore, couldn't get past page three for the awfulness of the prose.

At school the kids are mad for...Captain Underpants, Judy Moody and Stink, Jack and Annie (Magic Treehouse) Junie B. Jones, Mercy Watson, Jake Maddox, Ivy and Bean, Baby Mouse, Tiger Moth and the ABC Mysteries, Wimpy Kid. A real slowdown on demand Lemony Snicket. I am seeing a resurgence of Babysitters Club, Goosebumps, Animorphs and Boxcar Children. Dan Gutman's Million Dollar Books (though not the same characters, same themes) and My Weird School continue to be popular. Still in demand , Harry Potter.

I wish we had reprints of Einstein Anderson.

For older students... Kane Chronicles, Lightning Thief, Anne Urso's Chronos Chronicles I am thrilled to see the return of the Kate McMullen's fractured Greek Mythology, Mytho-Mania series, first one..Have a Hot Time in Hades

New series gaining traction , Emily Windsnap, The name of this book is secret, Big Nate, Lunch Lady.

What makes series books so attractive?

I think we (adults and children) like to revisit familiar places and friends. The hard work of fiction reading is getting to know the time and place. I know I love mysteries by Conant and her central character Holly, the dog writer, the mystery is actually secondary to enjoying what she and her friends have been up to since the last book.
